New PM warns Britain is still a target for terrorists
LONDON -- Newly installed British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met his first crisis head-on today. It was a potential car bomb that police defused in the wee hours of the morning in central London.
Speaking to reporters outside his residence, Brown says: "The first duty of a government is the security of the people." He went on to say, "We face a serious and continued security threat to our country."
Brown says the home secretary is holding an emergency meeting on the incident, after which he'll brief the British Cabinet.
Brown says the incident demonstrates "the need for us to be vigilant at all times." He warns British citizens to be alert to "any potential incident" and says "vigilance must be maintained over the next few days."
