East Longmeadow shuts down school after students fall ill

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. -- An East Longmeadow elementary school has been closed for the rest of the week after about one-fifth of the students came down with flu-like symptoms.

The town's board of selectman voted to close the Meadow Brook School on Tuesday night after more than 140 students reported feeling ill and Superintendent Edward Costa said children were getting sick at "an alarming rate."

Costa says at this point there is no indication that any of the sick students have swine flu.

He says school officials hope that a five-day break will be enough time to break the cycle.

Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday. No other schools in town are affected.

Meadow Brook serves preschoolers through second-graders.
