Developments on swine flu in Massachusetts
Key developments on the swine flu outbreak in Massachusetts:
CONFIRMED CASES: The state Public Health Department has confirmed 11 new cases, bringing the total in the state to 45.
------
GEOGRAPHICAL BREAKDOWN: The state is now only releasing the home counties of the confirmed cases. Thirty are in Middlesex County; Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk counties have three each; Plymouth and Bristol counties have two each. Franklin and Worcester counties' first cases were confirmed Tuesday.
------
AGES: The state says Massachusetts residents with swine flu range in age from 7 to 57. Most are children and teenagers. Three have required hospitalization, but they have been discharged.
------
SCHOOLS: Harvard Elementary School closed Wednesday because one student was diagnosed with swine flu. The superintendent called the closure a "precautionary action" and expects the school to reopen Thursday. A Roman Catholic school, the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsborough, was shut down by the Boston Archdiocese for a week because one student contracted H1N1. State officials are no longer recommending that schools close if a student or staff member has swine flu.
