Jewish synagogue and business vandalized; one arrest

NORTH MIAMI BEACH (WSVN) -- Four Jewish-related locations in South Florida fall victim to hate crimes late Saturday night.

Police arrested one juvenile after four suspects were spotted spray-painting the anti-semantic symbols onto the business located at Northeast 164th Avenue in North Miami Beach.  A community patrol officer saw the suspects in the act and notified police. The three other suspects fled the scene and are still on the loose.

This is the fourth vandalism in a string of graffiti on Jewish-related businesses in the North Miami Beach area.

The spray-painted red swastikas and vulgar lettering displayed on the facades of two synagogues and two Jewish stores were discovered Monday morning.

Shaaray Tefilah synagogue located at 971 NE 172nd Street and the Young Israel synagogue located 990 NE 171st Street were both covered in anti-semetic graffitti.

Kosher World store at 1123 NE 163rd Street and the Judaica store located at 1125 NE 163rd Street were also vandalized.

"It's dispicable what people do," says Yona Groffman. "Just because we're different than them."

This incident occurred just a few days after a man in Seattle, Washington went on a shooting rampage in a Jewish synagogue killing one person and injuring several others.

"We definitely have to be vigilant, we have to watch," says Yitzie Spalter. "I hope this is not the beginning of some bigger problems."

Police are still looking for the suspect(s) involved in this crime. If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of the culprit, you are urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305)471-TIPS.
