High school football players booted off team in Texas for giving blood
UNDATED -- There is trouble in Texas under the Friday night lights.
Some Willis High School players got a shock from the coach when they didn't make practice.
"First thing he said is your off the team, and your football career is over," Phillip McKenna, a Willis High School football player, said.
Six players say head football Coach Mack Malone kicked them off the team, after finding out they donated blood at school earlier in the day.
The players say they went to their locker room to suit up, but they were told to leave.
"We were going to practice... we were going out to practice, and all of our stuff was taken out of our lockers, and we were told to go home [and] that we were done playing football," football player Jeff Checheam said.
"I haven't missed one practice," athlete Jayson Olner said. "Even when I was injured, I was out there trying to get better… football is my life."
Parents and players tried talking to the coaches, but they got no answer.
"We're doing an investigation," Superintendent Brian Zemlicka said. "We're gonna sit with parents and visit about it."
Football isn't just another sport in Willis, Texas. The boys dream of playing high school ball.
"I just want to play the last three games of my senior year," Olner said.
