Mass. town refines swimming restrictions at beach where man drowned over Labor Day weekend

CHATHAM, Mass. -- Chatham town officials have further refined swimming restrictions at a beach following a Labor Day weekend drowning.

The Parks and Recreation Commission yesterday decided to prohibit swimming for the rest of the year in a large semicircle beginning 2,200 feet south of the Lighthouse Beach stairway around the sandbar where 46-year-old Thomas McDonald of Groton drowned on Aug. 31 while trying to rescue his daughter.

The commission ordered that signs be posted to warn beachgoers against swimming. Swimming will still be allowed in open areas on the north end of the beach.

The commission still has to decide whether to put lifeguards on the beach next summer. Right now, just one person patrols the beach on an all-terrain vehicle.
