Proposition 2 1/2 overrides meet with mixed results
UNDATED -- Mixed results for several Proposition 2 1/2 overrides as cities and towns around Massachusetts struggle with budget deficits.
In Randolph, voters Tuesday approved a nearly $5.5 million property tax override after being threatened with a state takeover of the town's public schools.
But overrides were rejected by voters in Holbrook, Chelmsford and Harvard. In Dartmouth, voters approved funds to fill several vacant police positions, but rejected two education-related measures.
Holbrook officials warned that the failure to approve a $2.8 million override could mean the end of varsity sports in high school.
Massachusetts Municipal Association executive director Geoff Beckwith says many communities are facing a choice between "bad and worse" -- tax hikes or cuts in services.
