College campus on alert after bacterial meningitis diagnosis
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- A student on the campus of Fitchburg State College has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, an illness that can be very contagious and even deadly.
School officials sent out an e-mail letting students know about the diagnosis.
The e-mail said people who were in close contact with the infected female student are also being treated, while the school tries to figure out who else might be at risk.
Officials warned students that the symptoms of bacterial meningitis can be confused with the flu, which is going around all over the state, including on campus.
They said bacterial meningitis can show itself through severe headaches, a fever, vomiting, and a skin rash.
