Governor's Councilor accused of throwing curling iron at store clerk
BOSTON -- A member of the Governor's Council has been accused of assaulting a store clerk with a curling iron when the clerk refused to accept her personal check.
Waltham police have filed a complaint against Marilyn Devaney in connection with the incident at a beauty supply store earlier this month.
According to a police report, Devaney said to the clerk: "Don't you know who I am?" She also pointed to her Governor's Council license plate on her car and took out her Statehouse identification badge.
But the clerk -- Adriana Latif -- refused to accept the personal check because store policy requires a driver's license. Latif told the Boston Globe that Devaney then threw the bag containing the curling iron at her and left the store.
Devaney said in a written statement that she will be exonerated once all the facts are known.
The Governor's Council is an elected body that reviews judicial nominations and pardons.
