1,100 ton historic Salem church rolled to new location
SALEM, Mass. -- The First Baptist Church was moved a couple hundred feet away to a new home on Tuesday.
The church stood in its location on Federal Street for over 200 years.
Crews were trying to lift the church onto wheel beds and roll the building to its new location before Wednesday's forecasted snowfall.
The church is the oldest in Salem and because of its historical significance it could not simply be torn down to make way for a new courthouse.
Engineers were brought in from Maryland to handle the job.
Steel beams, pipes, and cables were used to support the 1,100 ton structure.
Onlookers lined up against the construction fence to get a view of the big move.
One woman expressed that seeing the church move was emotional because she was married there.
Once moved, the church will become the new law library for the courthouse.
