EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- Flames broke out in an apartment complex, sending at least seven people to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

One person was reported having critical injuries.

The fire started at around 7am on Sunday in the five-story apartment building for seniors on Father Jacobee Road near Maverick Square.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue people waiting out on balconies and hanging out broken windows who were trying to escape the smoke.

The MBTA has sent buses to provide shelter for the people who have been evacuated.
