Mass. Turnpike tolls focus of government hearings

BOSTON -- The proposal to raise tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike and Boston tunnels and bridges is the subject of a set of public hearings.

One being held Wednesday afternoon at the Statehouse focuses on whether the turnpike should be sold and privatized to raise money to pay off the Big Dig.

Another hearing later Wednesday at City Hall will focus on the impact of raising the tolls on the Sumner and Ted Williams tunnels and the Mystic Tobin Bridge.

All the action comes as the Turnpike Authority considers nearly doubling the tunnel tolls from $3.50 to $7 to cope with the staggering debt left by the nearly $15 billion Central Artery project.

One alternative also being discussed is a hike in the state's gasoline tax.
