Kennedy's Harvard honors is latest among accolades

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sen. Edward Kennedy will join an elite group when receives an honorary degree from Harvard University.

The ceremony scheduled for Monday will give his home state another moment to recall the Kennedy mystique and Kennedy's own decades of work in the Senate.

Kennedy was originally scheduled to receive the degree at Harvard's commencement last spring, but was recuperating from brain surgery. That led Harvard to schedule the special ceremony. Only George Washington, Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela have been similarly honored.

The 76-year-old Kennedy, who graduated from the school in 1954, said he was "enormously grateful" for the honor.

Harvard says the honor will recognize Kennedy's "lifelong commitment" to public service and social issues.
