Walter Boverini died at age 84
LYNN, Mass. -- Former Massachusetts senate majority leader Walter Boverini has died at age 84.
His daughter, Maria Boverini, says the former Democratic legislator died Saturday afternoon at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a two-month battle with brain cancer. Funeral plans are pending.
Boverini served one term as a state representative before he was elected a senator in 1972. He became the majority leader in 1985.
Boverini retired in 1994, but continued to work on-and-off as a political consultant and lobbyist.
Boverini served as an air force gunner during World War II, flying 35 combat missions and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He previously worked as a teacher, head football coach and eventually became a vice principal at the English High School in Lynn.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
His death was first reported by the Daily Item newspaper of Lynn.
