Maine county is the only one in New England to go for McCain
BANGOR, Maine -- There are 65 counties in New England. But only one -- Piscataquis County in northern Maine -- went for Republican John McCain in the Nov. 4 presidential election.
The county, best-known for Moosehead Lake and Baxter State Park, can also claim to be a Republican stronghold.
On Election Day, Barack Obama soundly beat McCain statewide by a margin of 58-41. But in Piscataquis County, McCain took 51 percent of the vote to 47 percent for Obama.
In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Republican Susan Collins got 69 percent of the vote in the county. In the 2nd District congressional race, longshot Republican John Frary got 41 percent against Democratic incumbent Michael Michaud, Frary's best showing in any of Maine's 16 counties.
The GOP is a dying breed in New England. Come inaugural day in January, there'll be no Republican members in the House of Representatives, while only three of the region's 12 senators will be Republican.
