Vandals spray paint swastika on local temple sign

NEWTON, Mass. -- A local place of worship was hit by hate over the weekend when vandals targeted a synagogue.

Parents on their way to a bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah saw that a swastika had been spray painted on the entrance sign of Temple Shalom in Newton.

The Temple has since removed the symbol that is believed to have been spray painted late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

"It provokes a lot of hurt, a lot of anxiety, a lot of anger," said Rabbi Michelle Pearlman, of the Temple of Shalom.

The Temple will hold an interfaith event next Sunday condemning the vandalism. Pearlman already has the support of the mayor and other religious leaders.

"I hope this is a chance for us all to come together," Pearlman said.

Newton police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, and right now, they believe it is an isolated incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newton Police Department.
