Ammunition found in classroom prompts school lockdown

HAMILTON, Mass. -- Officials locked down a local high school as a precaution Monday afternoon.

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, located at 775 Bay Road in Hamilton, was locked down just before 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon after school officials found small amount of ammunition in a classroom.

Local Hamilton and Wenham police responded. The State Police K9 unit was brought in to search the lockers and the school.

A student came forward during the lockdown and said he had ammunition in his pocket and that he had lost it.

No guns were found in the school.

The students were dismissed just before 4 p.m. They were required to leave all of their belongings in the school and each student was searched before they were allowed to exit.

The incident is still under investigation.
