Mom tosses children out of burning building

CLINTON, Mass. -- A mother dropped her two children to safety after they became trapped inside their burning third-floor apartment.

The three-alarm fire broke out at about 5:45 a.m. Saturday at 121-123 Sterling Street.

The mother threw her two children, ages 3 and 6, to a neighbor below before she was rescued by firefighters.

"You could hear her yelling from the window," said David Kobus, who caught the children.

Kobus said that there were no other options, so he asked her to drop the kids down from the window.

"I caught 'em and [fell] right on the ground, they went on the ground, I went on the ground," said Kobus. "It's a lot of weight coming down, but they were okay."

The two children were not injured, but the mother was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
