Local comedian criticized for comments about autism

BOSTON -- A Boston comedian is under fire for some controversial comments in his new book.

Denis Leary's attacks the subject of autism and the parents of autistic children in his new publication "Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid."

Leary believes that doctors are conspiring to falsely diagnose autism in children.

"There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-(expletive) kid can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks...to get back diagnoses that can help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons," Leary said in his new book.

Leary's comments have upset many parents of autistic children.

"He is someone who needs to come to somebody's house for a few hours to see what its like to live with someone with autism," said Terri Farrell, mother of an autistic son.

Leary said in an interview that his favorite chapter is the one on autism and he hopes people come out to picket the book that way it might sell more copies.
