Van crashes into toll plaza on Tobin Bridge

Van crashes into toll plaza on Tobin Bridge

CHELSEA, Mass. -- 13 people were injured Thursday when a van struck a toll plaza on the Tobin Bridge.

The van was traveling southbound a little after 6 p.m. when it hit the cement barrier shutting down one lane of traffic and causing quite a mess for the evening commute.

There are signs on the Tobin Bridge warning drivers to slow down before approaching the toll, but the driver said he could not slow down or stop.

The driver of the van told police he lost brakes and then lost control. According to emergency officials, the driver of the van had the parts to repair the brakes. They were found in a box in the van. He had planned to get the brakes fixed.

The 13 passengers were taken to local hospitals, including Tufts Medical Center, Mass General Hospital and Boston Medical Center.

Police managed to keep two of three lanes open and waved tolls in order to keep traffic moving at rush hour.

The cause is being investigated by the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team.
