Observant neighbors save family from carbon monoxide poisoning

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- A family was saved when neighbors noticed a carbon monoxide leak coming from the home next door in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Cheryl Lako of 142 Kelley Blvd. woke up with a headache and noticed a smoke-like smell.

"As soon as I woke up I could smell a soot smell," Lako described.

She woke up her husband who looked outside to see smoke coming from the neighbor's chimney.

While he called police, Cheryl banged on the door and rang the doorbell to try waking her neighbors up.

Firefighters arrived and broke into a back door.

They woke up the mother and children sleeping in the home. The family was treated and later released from the hospital.

The cause was determined as a furnace that had backfired, causing a carbon monoxide leak.

Firefighters stressed the importance of carbon monoxide detectors in homes.
