Boxer to manage campaign for Mass. state rep's seat

WORCESTER, Mass. -- A three-time world champion boxer is going for a knockout in the political arena.

Jose Antonio Rivera has agreed to become the campaign chairman for an independent candidate for state representative, Matthew Taylor.

Taylor is trying to unseat John Fresolo, a Worcester Democrat.

Rivera says he's getting involved in politics because Taylor is a "great guy" and a family man whom he wants the voters to know and understand.

The 35-year-old Rivera is a former World Boxing Association welterweight and super welterweight champion, and an International Boxing Organization welterweight titlist.

Rivera announced his retirement last fall, but recently decided to return to boxing.

Taylor, who is making his first run for office, said Rivera is a man of honor who shares his commitment to positive change.
