Man hospitalized as house burns during police standoff

HUDSON, N.H. -- Police say officers had to rescue a Hudson, New Hampshire, man who set his house on fire during a standoff.

Forty-nine-year-old Michael Abbott was flown to a Boston hospital Friday with burns.

Police Capt. Don Breault said Abbott called police to his house just before 8 a.m., saying he wanted to speak to them about a domestic situation. When officers got there, they found Abbott barricaded inside, threatening to blow up the house and harm himself or anyone who went in.

Nearby homes were evacuated as officers tried to talk Abbott out. Breault says shortly before 12:30, about four and a half hours after he called, Abbott set his house on fire. There is no word on his condition.

Breault said no one else was hurt and no one else was in the home at the time.
