HARTFORD, Conn. -- A Manchester man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of his longtime companion and mother of seven children.
Fifty-three-year-old Ramon Rivera was sentenced Thursday for the 2005 killing of 48-year-old Sergia Alfinez.
Police say the couple had been living together for 30 years. A prosecutor says that Rivera had threatened to kill Alfinez a week before her death, prompting her to obtain a restraining order against him.
An autopsy shows she died of traumatic asphyxiation.
Police say violence has been a part of their relationship and in 2003 Rivera repeatedly struck Alfinez in the head with a dumbbell.
Rivera pleaded guilty to murder.
