New Bedford police kill man who came at them with knives
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- New Bedford police have released the identity of a man they shot and killed after he allegedly threatened officers with knives.
Gerard Tierney was killed Wednesday after police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor who said Tierney chased him while holding a knife in each hand.
Police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silva said Tierney refused to drop the two kitchen knives, despite repeated orders from police. He said the 45-year-old Tierney was shot by two officers as he moved toward them, holding the knives.
Police said Tierney had a long criminal record, including convictions for armed robbery and assault and battery on a police officer.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of several investigations.
