NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- A local high school student who collapsed during a track meet one week ago has died.
Alex Farese, 17, died Monday at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He collapsed after running a 400-meter event at the high school.
His family said he had no previous history of heart or fainting problems and that an abnormal rhythm may have caused his heart to stop breathing.
North Andover High School will be open this week, even though it is school vacation. Teachers, guidance and grief counselors will all be available for students mourning the loss of Alex.
Many students and athletes gathered to remember Alex and the next race will be held in his honor.
