Boston Ballet to move from Wang Theatre to Opera House in 2009
BOSTON -- The Boston Ballet is stepping out of its longtime home.
After performing for three decades at the 3,600-seat Wang Theatre, the ballet has announced that it has signed a long-term contract to move into the 2,600-seat Opera House, beginning in 2009.
The Boston Globe reports that a dispute over "The Nutcracker" led to the breakdown in negotiations between the ballet and the Citi Performing Arts Center, which oversees the Wang Theater on Tremont Street.
The ballet had insisted that any new deal include a production of the popular holiday show. The Citi Center had replaced The Nutcracker with the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular" in 2004.
The Nutcraker was eventually moved to the Colonial Theater and later to the Opera House on Washington Street.
