Suspect arrested after he contacted police from stolen cell phone
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Police have arrested a suspect in a violent home invasion.
Police say they Joshua Whipple, 18, broke into the home of an elderly woman. He allegedly robbed and beat her, and then threatened to rape her.
Police were searching for Whipple when he contacted them.
"He was curious as to why we were out in the field looking for him, detectives were out looking for him, and in fact contacted one of our detectives here in the office," Sgt. Glenn Fossa, Fitchburg Police Department, said.
Whipple called police using a cell phone that he had allegedly stolen from the victim.
"Well it gave us a call number from that cell phone, which was inevitably traced… that resulted in applying for a warrant for Mr. Whipple's arrest," Sgt. Fossa said.
Whipple will be arraigned Wednesday in Fitchburg District Court.
