Bentley College student treated for bacterial meningitis

WALTHAM, Mass. -- State health officials say about 200 Bentley College students have been given preventative antibiotics after the second case of bacterial meningitis at the school in recent months.

The female student was being treated in the intensive care unit of a Boston hospital, but her family said she was improving.

A spokeswoman for Bentley said the college was aggressively tracking down everyone who might have had contact with the infected student.

An 18-year-old freshman, Erin Ortiz, died after contracting bacterial meningitis last October. School officials say the cases are unrelated.

Symptoms of the disease can include severe headache and high fever.
