College student hit by truck near UMass-Lowell
LOWELL, Mass. -- A local college student was seriously injured Thursday morning when she was hit by a truck in Lowell.
Rachel Carnes, 21, of Haverhill, is a student at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. She suffered head trauma when she was hit by a pickup truck on University Avenue, across from Alumni Hall.
After striking Carnes, the Dodge Ram hit two utility poles. The driver was identified as Jeffrey Hoban, 25, of Dracut.
Police said they believe Hoban had some sort of medical episode behind the wheel.
University Avenue was closed to traffic after the crash.
Carnes was airlifted to Boston Medical Center, and her condition is unknown.
Authorities are investigating the accident.
