Road reopened after truck crashed into an overpass

REVERE, Mass. -- Crews have reopened a road after determining the bridge over it was structurally safe.

Crews were working on the Chelsea Bridge after a truck traveling on Broadway crashed into it, causing debris to litter the road.

The dumpster truck struck the Route 16 overpass around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

"We had this dumpster truck, which dumped off a dumpster on the other side of the Route 16 bridge on (Route) 107," Major Kevin Kelly, Revere Police Department, said. "And apparently he left the arm up on the truck."

"It was fine until he got to the bridge, and when he got under the bridge that's his reel did strike the undersiding of the bridge causing substantial damage," Deputy Chief Michael Conley, Revere Fire Department, said.

The accident caused a decorative edge around the bridge to crumble.

Structural engineers determined that the bridge is safe, however crews are working to clear away any loose granite before they will reopen the bridge.

The truck driver, Willie Hall, 52, works for Casella Waste Services. He told 7News that he is grateful that no one was hurt in the accident.
