Possible settlement for family of woman killed in Big Dig disaster

BOSTON -- There may be a possible settlement in the Big Dig tunnel disaster that left Melina Del Valle, of Jamaica Plain, dead.

The Boston Globe reports the family of Melina Del Valle is close to accepting a settlement of about $6 million from Powers Fasteners.

Powers Fasteners supplied the epoxy used to hold ceiling bolts in place inside the I-90 connector tunnel.

The epoxy failed, causing tons of concrete to fall.

Those concrete panels fell on a car, instantly killing Melina Del Valle, 38.

Her husband, Angel Del Valle, was also in the car, but survived.

Powers Fasteners is one of 15 defendants in a multi-million dollar lawsuit filed by the Del Valle family.

Other defendants include Big Dig project manager Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff and the Mass. Turnpike Authority.
