Local soldier headed back to Iraq day before Thanksgiving

BOSTON -- While families come together this Thanksgiving holiday, several others are saying goodbye to loved ones serving overseas.

Army Spc. Brendan Murphy's, 25, 18-day leave ended Wednesday; just hours prior to the beginning of Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays," Murphy said. "You get together with the family and all sit at one table."

Murphy is headed back to Iraq for his second tour of duty.

"I'm not really looking forward to leaving my family, but kinda inching to go back to my guys over there," Murphy said.

Murphy's departure is hard on his family; however, with turkey sandwiches over the dinner table, they were able to celebrate the holiday together.

At this time of thanks, Murphy's family is thankful for Brendan's health.

"I just thank my family for supporting me," Murphy said. "They're the ones that help me get through it."

Murphy's tour of duty ends in September. He doesn't plan to reenlist, instead he plans to go back to school and become a police officer.
