Scottish man contracts Triple-E while visiting New England
EDINBURGH, Scotland -- A Scottish man is in a coma after contracting Eastern equine encephalitis.
Michael Nicholson, 35, is believed to have contracted the mosquito born virus during a fishing trip to New Hampshire over the summer.
Nicholson, a painter and decorator, is being treated at a hospital in Edinburgh.
According to Nicholson's family, even if he lives, he'll be severely disabled for the rest of his life.
"You can never give up hope," Sharan McKenzie, Nicholson's sister, said. "You always have hope, but the prognosis has not been good. He is not going to get his life back to how it was. I don't think there is any chance of that."
This summer, Nicholson spent six weeks with family and friends in Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
He became ill on August 31, the day after flying back to Scotland.
