Thieves attack while people are home

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Police are looking for burglars who break into homes while the owners are inside.

Police say they're searching for several people suspected in a series of break-ins that happened in the past two weeks.

They say the thieves get in through back doors or sneak through open windows.

In many cases, people heard noise but didn't think much of it.

Capt. John O'Leary of the Brookline Police Dept. told people to keep their homes secure.

"I know it's tough in this type of weather," he said, but people should "lock all the windows, especially on the first and the basement floors as well as their doors [and] take any valuables off the countertops."

Police say if you hear anything out of the ordinary while at home, don't just dismiss it.

If you see anything suspicious, please call Brookline police.
