Thieves steal copper from local warehouse
BILLERICA, Mass. -- A group of crooks pulled off a vintage crime at a local wine warehouse.
A large amount of copper was stolen from the air conditioners of Andes Imports International within the past two weeks, police said.
"There was approximately about 100 pounds worth of... copper, which obviously is very necessary to operate these air conditioner condensers," Officer Robert Brown, of the Billerica Police Dept., said.
Police said the thieves cut through fencing to reach the warehouse. With the copper stolen, temperatures soared inside the building.
Without the air conditioning system working properly, the company's stockpile of wine may be ruined.
"It's a growing problem within the community," said Officer Brown of copper thefts. "To people who steal, this it's worth a substantial amount of money, and it's used to pawn off for cash."
