Rescuers rush to the aid of a driver who drove car off retaining wall
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- A driver became trapped in his car after he plummeted nearly 30 feet to the ground off of a retaining wall.
Witnesses were everywhere as firefighters and EMTs rushed to the scene and worked to rescue the trapped driver.
Christopher Day was the first to the scene as he tried to assist the man before officials arrived.
"He wasn't responding to me," Christopher Day, witness, said. "I asked him again 'are you alright sir,?' He didn't respond. And as I was looking at him, I didn't notice him breathing or moving at all. I thought for sure that the guy was definitely dead."
The crew that responded to the scene was able to pull the driver out of his vehicle still conscious. According to officials, the driver tried to speak as he was being rushed to the hospital.
Witnesses of the accident say that a group of kids were playing basketball near where the drive lost control of his car.
"There were kids playing basketball up there," Ana Araujo, witness, said. "So, I don't know if he was trying to avoid an accident or what, but I hope that whatever happened, it wasn't something caused by somebody else."
Police are investigating the incident.
