Theft victim finds old bike being sold by suspect online

BOSTON -- Police bust an apparent bicycle bandit in Boston after the woman whose bike was swiped sat down at her computer and made a surprising discovery.

While searching online for a new bike to replaces hers that was stolen three months ago, Danielle Stevens came across her old one being sold for $100 on craigslist.com.

"My jaw dropped," said Stevens. "I was panicking. I couldn't believe I was seeing my bike."

Immediately, she called the police to tell them someone was selling her stolen bike in plain sight. So together, they set up a sting to get it back.

"He was just pumped... the officer, I was shocked," said Stevens.

They met the man selling the bike in the Stop & Shop parking lot in Roxbury. Recognizing its peeled-off stickers and familiar scratches, Stevens immediately knew it was her old bike.

"We introduced each other, we shook hands and the officer asked how much he was selling it for... and when he said the price she tapped her head like this and that was the signal [that] it was him and the other officers came up and arrested him," said Stevens.

The man who was allegedly selling the bike faced charges in Roxbury.
If convicted, he could face up to five years behind bars.

Stevens meanwhile said she is still stunned she has her bike back and is just glad to be riding again.

"I want to get a bell and a basket for it and all the stuff for it, and I'm just going to go to town with it," said Stevens.
