Mother gives birth along Massachusetts Turnpike

MILBURY, Mass. -- Things did not go as planned for a couple from Palmer as they were heading to the hospital on Friday morning to deliver their baby boy.

Medical crews and a trooper from the Charlton barracks responded around 5:30 a.m. to reports that a 29-year-old woman had gone into labor on the Massachusetts Turnpike near mile 99 in Milbury.

"It looked like the baby's head was pressing up against her jeans," Eric Rayleonard, father, said. "So, needless to say I pulled the car over [and] called 911."

Paramedics arrived soon after the call for help, assisting the couple in the delivery of their son, Donovan Rayleonard.

"She was still in the front passenger seat and delivered apparently in the front seat," Steve Hughes, paramedic, said.

"The umbilical chord hadn't been cut yet, so we clamped the chord and we allowed the father to cut the chord," Danielle Goodspeed, paramedic, said.

The mother and child were taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where Baby Donovan is in intensive care for observation.

"I always wanted to catch my baby, but I just never expected it to be on the side of the Massachusetts Turnpike," Rayleonard said.
