Seven guards attacked in prison melee

MIDDLETON, Mass. -- Seven inmates at a state prison in Middleton are facing charges after allegedly attacking several guards early yesterday morning.

Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins says the prisoners slid under shower stalls in what he calls a planned attacked.

The seven allegedly used their shackles to beat the guards before other security personnel broke up the melee at the Essex County House of Correction.

The prisoners all pleaded not guilty yesterday in Salem District Court to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a correctional officer.

Cousins says two of the officers suffered head wounds that needed stitches.

All the prisoners involved in the attack were housed in the segregation unit.
