Officials to debate outlawing pit bulls in Bay State

BOSTON -- Local lawmakers are considering a state-wide ban on pit bulls after a series of attacks against children.

The most recent incident involved a 7-year-old boy from Dorchester, whose was bitten in the arm on his way to play baseball.

"They're vicious, they're attack dogs, and you know, they're not going to go get your paper or your slippers," said William Morant, the victim's father. "On the same day an hour earlier, a young girl got attacked and bitten in the face."

In March, a 14-year-old boy from Medford was bitten by a pit bull that was not on a leash.

"I've seen plenty of nice pit bulls, so I don't think it has a lot to do with the breed," Pat Hogan, of Medford Animal Control, said.

Word of a pit bull ban has drawn criticism from veterinarians, pet owners and animal rights activists. Supporters though, like Maynard Town Administrator John Curran, are staying firm in their push to lawmakers.

"You need to show good judgement on the kind of dog you have in your home, and a pit bull and a rottweiler are not appropriate," said Curran.

Many cities around Massachusetts, including Boston, have regulations regarding pit bulls, including rules about wearing muzzles.

However, no state has banned the breed entirely.
