JUST ONE STATION: Thief pockets charitable donations

PHILLPSTON, Mass. -- Police are looking for a trick thief who was caught on camera swiping cash meant for a charity.

On April 24 around 7:30 p.m., the suspect walked into the Woodside Variety Store in Phillipston and ordered a bologna sandwich. When the clerk was not looking, the thief can be seen on camera reaching into a charity jar for Pennies for Sight, a charity that helps prevent blindness in babies. Surveillance footage then shows the suspect swiping approximately $60.

The thief next steals some beef jerky, which he puts inside of his jacket.

When the clerk returned with the sandwich, the suspect paid with the money he just looted. Police believe that the suspect has committed similar crimes in the past.

"He was so calm, so so calm," said Chief Richard Valcourt, Phillipston Police Department. "He knew what he was doing. He knew he was being video taped. If you view the video, if you look at the video, he's looking at the clerk. He's making all of his considerations."

Police are asking the public for help. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phillipston police at 978-939-8875.

Donations to the Pennies for Sight charity can be sent to:
Phillipston Lyons Club, c/o Town Hall
50 The Common
Phillipston, MA 01331
