May Day rallies planned for Boston Common, other Bay State locations

UNDATED -- Advocates for immigrants in Massachusetts are joining others around the nation holding May Day events today.

Activists plan to march to Boston Common for a 4 p.m. rally. Among those expected to take part are workers who were detained after a March sixth immigration raid at a leather goods factory in New Bedford.

Sergio Reyes of the Boston May Day Coalition tells The Boston Globe that the group is seeking a moratorium on future raids and deportation until immigration reform measures are put in place.

In Springfield, activists are scheduled to march to the Old First Church in Court Square for a rally and vigil this afternoon.

In Worcester, Roman Catholic Bishop Robert McManus is among those scheduled to speak during a "Day of Solidarity Rally" at City Hall.

Events were also planned today in several other Bay State communities including Lowell, Fitchburg, Amherst and Pittsfield.
