Shoplifter nearly forgets 8-year-old niece escaping police
BRAINTREE, Mass. -- So much for no child left behind.
Police arrested a 60-year-old Mattapan woman, who almost abandoned her 8-year-old niece after they were caught on camera shoplifting at Marshall's at Pearl Plaza in Braintree.
As the suspects were approached by the store's loss prevention authorities, the woman's 31-year-old accomplice from Attleboro allegedly dropped the stolen property and fled to her Dodge Caravan with her one-year-old daughter.
However, the Mattapan woman ran off without her young niece, who witnesses say could be heard in the parking lot crying, "Don't leave me!"
The Attleboro twosome reportedly doubled back to pick up their alleged, Mattapan accomplices.
Yet an off-duty Boston police officer coincidentally witnessed the scene and followed the four to Quincy, where they were eventually detained.
Police have not released the suspects' names, because they have not yet been officially charged.
The Department of Social Services has been notified about the suspects' children.
