Boston-area colleges students, administrators and law officers respond to Virginia Tech tragedy

BOSTON -- The victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy are also being remembered on college campuses here in Boston.

Students at Boston College gathered for a prayer service Tuesday afternoon (pictured), as they also thought about their own security at school.

Meanwhile, Boston University held a vigil outside Marsh Chapel to remember those killed in Blacksburg, Virginia. Students at Boston University are also wondering whether their school security would be equipped to handle a situation similar to the Virginia Tech massacre.

"If something like that did ever happen, I mean, you just can't prepare for it," Rachel Leone, a college student, said.

However, Boston police are now trying to plan for such a scenario, meeting on Tuesday with representatives from 28 area colleges and universities to discuss ways to work together in crisis situations.

"They brought us together to discuss best practice and establish a framework by which we can all work together going forward," Andrew O'Brien, Vice Chancellor of UMass Boston, said.

The group focused on their protocol for a disaster scenario, like a mass shooting, as well as methods for better communication between school officials, authorities and students.

Boston police will work with campus officers on how to respond to active shooting situations. They plan to have training complete by Sept. 1.
