College student rescues ATV driver in danger

LAKEVILLE, Mass. -- Two ATVs crashed right through a patch of thin ice.

A witness caught the frightening accident Sunday on camera while Jason Schappert rushed to help ATV driver, Bob Hughes.

Schappert is college student and Florida native.

Hughes and another ATV driver were scouting the pond for water spots before their younger relatives went to ride out on the ice.

The pair saw the weak spot on the ice too late. The other ATV rider was able to swim to safety, but Hughes found himself in deep water danger.

Schappert and two other people, who were watching planes land on the ice, jumped into action to save the struggling driver, using a camera bag as a rope.

Hughes had thought the section of the ice that broke was safe, because he had driven over the same spot the previous week.
