200,000 may need additional health insurance

BOSTON -- A new report says more than 200,000 Massachusetts residents who already have health insurance could be forced to buy additional coverage.

Most of those in question either do not have prescription drug coverage or have drug coverage that is below the minimum standards proposed by the state board implementing the state's new universal health insurance law.

The board is scheduled to vote on the standards in March. Those who do not have insurance that meets the minimum standards could be fined.

Associated Industries of Massachusetts president Richard Lord calls that prospect "troubling." He says the law was designed to expand access for people without any health insurance, and he doesn't think people who already have coverage should be forced to spend more.
