Elder care program launches in program

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- A new program to help elderly residents of two public housing complexes in Chicopee launches today.

The program will help frail elders remain independent in their own homes.

Priscilla Chalmers, executive director of WestMass ElderCare, says the goal of the Supportive Housing Program is to create an "assisted living" environment in existing state-funded public elderly housing so residents have access to affordable support services that promote independence.

Chalmers says services will be offered on an as-needed basis 24 hours a day.

The services available will include service coordination and case management, 24-hour response to emergency situations, personal care, homemaker services and laundry, medication reminders, and social activities.
