Boy, 15, killed by Acela Express train due for stop in New York

MANSFIELD, Mass. -- An express train with a scheduled stop in New York struck and killed a 15-year-old boy as he crossed the tracks shortly after arriving in Mansfield aboard another train on Sunday.

Mansfield police said the teenager was killed instantly. His name was not released.

MBTA Police Lt. Mark Gillespie said there was some confusion over what happened between the time the teenager got off a Boston-bound commuter train, which departed from Providence, R.I., and when he was struck by the high-speed Acela Express.

The 1:30 p.m. accident occurred shortly before the Acela train reached the MBTA station in Mansfield, where it typically rolls past.

The train departed Boston's South Station at 1:10 p.m., with scheduled stops in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Some 160 passengers and crew reported no injuries aboard the train, said Marc Magliari, a spokesman for Amtrak, which operates the Acela Express.

After a nearly four-hour delay, passengers were transferred to a different southbound train, said passenger Monica Costello, a journalist.

"The train just slammed on the brakes," Costello said. "It wasn't totally uncomfortable, but it was unusual. The first announcement was, 'We have hit some debris.' But then, there was just a whole lot of panic going on, and we were told immediately it would be two-three hours (delayed) and I felt right away that doesn't sound right."
