Funeral services held today for City Councilor James Kelly
SOUTH BOSTON -- Funeral services will be held today for a long-time fixture on the Boston political scene -- City Councilor James Kelly.
Hundreds lined up outside Saint Brigid's Parish in South Boston Thursday for the late councilman's wake.
Jimmy Kelly died Tuesday at the age of 66, following a long battle with cancer.
Kelly served seven terms on Boston's City Council.
He's most remembered for fighting busing of minority students to schools in Southie.
Kelly also fought integration of South Boston's public housing.
Boston Mayor Tom Menino, who often clashed with Kelly, called him "a true gentleman, whose convictions always came from the heart."
